An hour and a half later, Jade and Alicia and I are saying goodbye outside of the restaurant and heading our separate ways. As I walk to my car, I pull out my phone and text Sean: Just got done with the girls. What are you up to?

A text from him pops up as I’m buckling my seatbelt: In the shop. Come by?

I text him back that I’ll see him soon. It’s a short drive over to his shop. The sign in the window is turned to CLOSED, but a light is glowing from inside, the sight of which immediately warms something deep in my chest. I knock on the door and he opens it a few seconds later.

“Hey,” he says. “Come in.”

The intoxicating smell of wood shavings fills my nose as I step inside. The shop feels a whole lot different at night, with the front part of it blanketed in darkness and the only light coming from the workshop area. I can tell just by looking at Sean that he’s been here all day, slaving away, and I can’t help but feel turned on at the thought of all the work he’s done with his hands.

I reach for one of those strong hands of his and pull him toward me. He dips his head down and kisses me, his lips dominating mine, but then he draws his face away.

“Sorry,” he says. “Just a little distracted.”

I frown. “Why? What’s up?”

“It’s just…my fucking landlord.” He sighs. “He’s hiking up the rent and being an asshole about it. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m probably going to have to give up this space. Don’t know where the hell I’m going to go, but…I dunno. I’ll figure out something.”

“What?” My heart feels heavy for him. “No. There’s got to be something you can do.”

“I wish there was.”

Silence falls between us for a few moments. I want nothing more than to help him, but I don’t know how I can. Chewing on my lip, I peer behind him, gazing toward the workshop.

“Is it okay if I look around?” I ask.

He nods, distraction still in his eyes. “Of course. I’ll give you a tour.”

He leads me back, explaining the different areas of his shop to me as we walk around the space.

“It’s so cool to see all this,” I say, looking at his workstation. He’s got most of what looks like a china cabinet on it, gleaming with fresh varnish and smelling faintly of cedar. “What did you repair on this piece?”

“That’s actually a custom piece. Made it from scratch.”

“Are you kidding me? It’s beautiful. All those details! It must have taken you forever.”

He nods but doesn’t say anything.

I look around, an idea forming in my head.

“How many pieces of furniture do you have made that are available for sale?”

He thinks for a second. “Fifteen, at least.”

“Okay. And how many more do you think you could make in, say…a month?”

“Depends on how complex they are,” he says, looking at me curiously. “Why?”
